I'm working on a deal to get a 4R70W out of a '03 Mach 1 with driveshaft, crossmember, shifter, etc. To make this go as smooth as possible, I'm going to use a Baumann Electronics TCS to control the trans. This way I can leave the EEC alone. I'll go thru the trans and do some valve body upgrades before it goes in. Might even put a mild converter in it, as she hopes to put on a Vortech next year. If I can't get stock trans lines, I'll make my own and just use an aftermarket cooler. I'll also have to find a set of pedals out of an auto. Can anybody give advice, warnings, or forsee any complications in this swap? I'm defninately gonna make use of those shifter install guidelines. I talked to Kevin over at Baumann Engineering and he answered any questions I had about the TCS setup. If the deal goes thru, I basically will get the trans and install a TransGo reprogramming kit. It's my girlfriends car, so as long as it doesn't have a clutch pedal, she will be happy. Do these model year cars still use a 3.08 gear for the 5spd cars and a 3.27 for the auto? I'm gonna try to leave the rear end alone and hope the slight stall converter will get it moving good off the line while still keeping a decent highway cruise rpm with that 3.08 in the rear. Opened up the filter and there was no visible clutch material or metal particles. I went ahead and did the update JMOD for the newer 4r70Ws off the tccoa website that they use for the Marauders. Now my next question is, will a Mach 1 flexplate bolt up to the 2v crank. I'm thinking about getting this Mach 1 converter restalled (if possible) instead of looking for a new flexplate and a stall converter. I'm more of a 94-95 guy myself, so this new edge stuff is new to me. I'm thinking about getting this Mach 1 converter restalled (if possible) instead of looking for a new flexplate and a stall converter. The auto Mach's use the same crank as the 01-04 GT's. For the converter I think Alan will restall them. DirtyDog Performance I emailed Alan just now and I e-mailed ArtCarr yesterday about restalling the converter. Yeah I decided to go the Jmod route instead after reading more about it and everybody ranting and raving about it. Being that this is my girlfriends car, I played it smart and saved the accumulator springs, just in case its too harsh. For conversation sake, what is that stall speed on a stock Mach 1 converter. About 100rpm higher than a GT right? The auto Mach's use the same crank as the 01-04 GT's. For the converter I think Alan will restall them. DirtyDog Performance He said thats the max he could take this converter to. My girlfriend is gettin anxious for me to get this thing done, so looks like I will be ordering the Baumann TCS shortly and getting this swap done pretty soon. I am wondering, will have any issues with hooking up the VSS from the manual trans to the auto. Are the signals different? He said thats the max he could take this converter to. My girlfriend is gettin anxious for me to get this thing done, so looks like I will be ordering the Baumann TCS shortly and getting this swap done pretty soon.I don't know if it slightly higher than the GT's or if it's the same. I am wondering, will have any issues with hooking up the VSS from the manual trans to the auto. Are the signals different? No I forgot to ask him what the stall speed of the Mach 1 converter was. Alldata shows the stall specs almost 100 rpm higher for the mach 1. It doesn't matter anyhow, because its getting restalled either way. Its a very well made unit, thats very compact and simple to install. Every wire is labeled where it goes.http://www.tierambulanz-am-saarplatz.at/uploads/02-pontiac-sunfire-manual.xml None of my computers have a floppy drive, so I need to take the floppy to an older computer at work and transfer the data over to a USB flash drive. I haven't found out much about the VSS signals. I've done some reading and searching here on Corral and it seems like the connectors are different, but thats about it. I'm just going to hook it up and see what happens. I called them and they verified the mistake. Baumann is sending me a new OSS (the older style) that will accept the plug on the harness. If they don't have one in stock, they are just gonna send me a pigtail for the OSS I have and i will splice that into the harness. The trans is goiong in next weekend. Should I do anymore modification to it internally before it goes in. The way its looking is that this car will probably get a Kenne Bell 2.1L supercharger next year and lay down about 400rwhp with that 3000 stall converter. Is just the J-Mod enough for this trans to handle that power? Left over GT harness I don't have a auto harness so I'm just gonna splice the OSS and the backup lamps into the full harness I got from Baumann.PM me if you want to get in contact and possibly hook up to use it after I get it (I'm actually in Streamwood). I'd have to do a little research on it, though. Come join the discussion about performance, production numbers, VIN decoders, modifications, troubleshooting, power adders, DIY tutorials, and more. As stated I'm converting my manual car to an auto.http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/65974 The auto transmission is bolted in but I'm having a problem with the shifter. The stock auto shifter I have is out of an 02 GT but it won't bolt to my transmission tunnel. Are automatic and 5spd tunnels different or is there a difference in model years. I'd really prefer to use the stock shifter but if I have to use an aftermarket shifter, which would work best with my 01 and still look decent. Keep in mind the car will be FULLY automatic so the shifter would have to work properly. Any idea's on how to get over this hurdle will be greatly appreciated as it's the last thing to do on the swap. But why the swap? The auto is built but I don't want to go with a man.I will later but not right now. The car is a daily driver and I put about a 1,000 miles a week on the car. I am just looking for something that will be consistent at the track also. I've had my car for about a year and a half now, trading for an auto is not an option. I have found out that ford built the transmission tunnels differently on 5 spd. and auto's. That's why the stock shifter won't bolt in properly. Now I have to try and rig the stock shifter in or find out which aftermarket shifters work the best on GT's. I wouldn't be asking these questions. Price was not the issue in any decision I've made. Thanks for your help guys, I found out how to fix the problem thanks to help here, corral, and Tim at MPH. Parts list and step by step instructions. Parts list and step by step instructions. Somethings you may need that is not pictured is an auto computer and either auto drive shaft or auto yoke. The best way around the auto computer is a full manual valve body which is what I will be ordering (thanks sharkbait) after the holidays.ADAMS-TOOL.COM/images/02-mitsubishi-lancer-repair-manual.pdf I will try to post up pictures of the swap as it goes, but as my buddies shop is doing the work I may not be there when it is happening, but will post up any problems he encounters. This may take some time to get done not because of the difficulty of the swap, but that shop works with me on the price if they can work on it during down time between other jobs. The swap on mine was definitely one of the best mods I've done and it was pretty easy too You could mount that shifter to the trans tunnel drill a couple holes and bolt it on. The shifter should have tabs to wire in the reverse lights. I have a Pro-matic 2 currently. Hurst makes some nice shifters. You could mount that shifter to the trans tunnel drill a couple holes and bolt it on. Hurst makes some nice shifters. The idle will be adjusted in the tune. The first gen on3 kit was not designed to be used with an auto. A couple things to add as far as swapping trans yoke it was cheaper for me to buy an auto drive shaft than to swap yoke. So if anybody is doing this check local jys for prices. Also I pick up a documented 34k auto transmission for 300. Auto computer may not be need. I member post he has changed manual computers to run an auto and showed me the changes to make in the tune. So I will post back if it works or not. Loaded the tune car through a code right away. 1747 code epc short circuit. After pulling trans pan test epc it was fine and testing all the harnesses we think it's a ecu problem. Lets start by getting acquainted with my build so far:Right now my cylinder walls are a mess and two pistons broke after going lean on the dyno roughly 6 years ago and I’m looking to get it fixed. The motor and transmission are not in the car (I do have them). If you were to choose a kit from them that includes a shortened driveshaft I would request the original instead and have it shortened locally. For an 04 they show a conversion from auto to a T3650. If they can provide this I would imagine they could convert to a T56(6 speed) or a different 5 speed if you are interested. Tom there was very helpful on the phone. AMP Performance:: Transmission:: Ford:: Transmission Conversions and Swap Kits:: 96-04 Mustang I actually asked someone who told me to try a t5 toploader because i can get a kit for around 1200. Will a t5 even work in my engine.I actually asked someone who told me to try a t5 toploader because i can get a kit for around 1200. Will a t5 even work in my engine. The T5 is weak and will not standp up to much abuse (unless you get a modified one). I'm not 100% sure on the mustangs but make sure the pedal hangar bracket under the dash is the same between automatic and a manual. You have to remove the driver's seat for access (unless you are a tiny person, which does not describe me since the age of 7). You then just start removing the dash until you can see all the hardware Richard mentioned. You WILL be disconnecting dozens of wires, cables, hoses, screws, bolts, brackets, connectors, and so forth. The console comes next. That's BEFORE you remove anything, which of course is before you INSTALL anything. Its a heckuva a job. And it requires a TON of time, even for a professional in a fully fitted shop. Also, you WILL have squeaks, rattles and gremlins in your accessory functions and air vents forever afterward, assuming BEST case and the install is as professional as anyone could ask. On my PITA-ometer, I have this one pegged at the top of the page. DOABLE, no doubt about it, I did it, and the car ran just fine afterwards. But I would not do it a second time. Better solution: Sell your car, and buy a 5 speed car. But IF you wind up doing it, take LOADS of pics (you will need them, and make sure your friend doing all the work TAGS every little wire and hose (etc, etc) as he disassembles so that everything will go back together again afterwards. As far as complete kits that include all this stuff. I have never seen one. The only way to keep the cost down would be by pulling parts from a donor car in a junkyard. If you have to buy all those parts retail, the cost will be high. Post up those pics. This would be very handy - this question crops up frequently (do a search on the forums and you will find the others). My setup (although still working on install) is posted there as well. I would have a new clutch, flywheel, slip yoke and u-joint but you would still need pedals and cable linkage system, starter shim plate etc. The T45RS is a stronger transmission than the Tr-3650 and IMO, it is better and definitely smoother shifting. The T45, like the T56 6 speed, is a single rail linkage system where the 3650 is a multi rail system. What that means is the single rail system has 1 main shift rail running thru it that the shift forks hang from while the multi rail uses 3 main rails with 1 fork on each rail. Single rail systems are noticeably smoother shifting as compared to a multi rail. Its just too much to put into the car and it may still have problems afterwards. Im of course a poor college kid too which doesnt help. Out of the 5 dealers I talked to, not one of them had one (and these are big dealers). I got a good deal on a fully loaded '00 but I've never been overly happy with the fact it's an auto. It's a beautiful car, silver with black leather interior. It has 48,000 miles on it and has never had anything done other than oil changes and coolant flush. Now that the car is almost paid off, it's time to have some fun with it. Do you all think it would be worth the swap. I'd really like to keep this one as it's my first brand new car, but if it would be more pain I might look for a used 04 Mach 1. Thanks for the help. Why would I need to reprogram the computer. I will start looking for a wrecked 99-04 to be a donor car. I plan to do all the work myself. You asked for info not opinions i hate it when people just say trade it inIf you have to ask what you need I'm gonna guess you'll have to ask how to do it. It will take alot more info than can be given over the net. Of course that is only the answer you will get if they're polite. Your 3rd choice (and the one I recomend) is to do all the preventive measures and live with a fussy transmission then if it fails bring it to Ford and let them fix it under wtty. Mark, I do mean the part about not trying to insult but unless you have done a ton of stuff to your car to make it special a swap is unrealistic. The Magnum is a transmission made by Tremec it may be more robust but the gear ratios do not work as well with the Coyote from what I've read.If you have to ask what you need I'm gonna guess you'll have to ask how to do it. The snickt-snickt of the gears, flawlessly executing a heel-toe downshift as you throw the car into the next turn of the Wendy’s drive-through, watching the revs rise in sync with your speedometer instead of lazily floating around the converter stall point, the brief moment of silence where the exhaust calms down and the vibrations stop as you push the clutch in, select the next gear, and unleash the dogs of war once more. These are counted highly among Things That I Like and so I took it upon myself to replace the aging, broken C3 automatic transmission in my 1986 Fox body Mustang with a 1995 T5 manual. I was quite surprised how small this trans is. It’s rather the compact thing and is light enough for a single person to carry it. Advertisement For those not familiar, this is the chosen victim. My 1986 notchback “four-eye” Mustang LX. With a 3-speed automatic and a throttle-body-injected 3.8 liter V6 from the dark days of the Malaise era this is no drag strip dominator, nor is the live rear axle and sloppy four-link suspension going to result in an autocross cone killer any time soon either. Clearly, something must be done to liven it up. Advertisement Step 1: Rethink your life choices Aside from just replacing the chunk of metal that makes the car move there is a critical addition to the interior that must be made: a third pedal. Unfortunately you can’t crawl under the dash bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with a clutch pedal in hand and bolt it to the firewall. Oh no. Here’s step 1: Advertisement Drop the steering column, realize it’s hanging up on all of the car’s super-rigged wiring for the stereo, destroy half of the wiring and then remove the column. Advertisement Four bolts under the dash and then a whole bunch of 30 year old plastic connectors that I attempted to gently remove at first and then began hitting with a hammer and chisel. Swollen plastic. Never again. Advertisement Upper dash must be removed and the gauge cluster pulled out so the speedometer cable can be pulled out into the engine bay. The grommet the speedo cable passes through on automatic cars is where the clutch cable has to go so it needs to be re-routed. A long extension assists with getting four bolts on the firewall free and then you find someone with more upper body strength to wiggle the pedalbox out of the car. Advertisement Lonely single sadness on the left, happy couple on the right. “Simply” toss it back into the car, which is 2 hours of swearing and struggling in this super dignified position: Advertisement Then take a quick glance at your pile of interior Advertisement Luckily Ford seems to do a decent job of making things come apart easily. Most of the time. Which is good because there is quite a lot that needs to come out. Advertisement Once the pedals are back in it only took a half hour or so to get the steering column back together and in the car, after which I checked to make sure all the relevant electronics and switchgear still worked. I also found a bolt in the steering column on the underside that has the head in the center that attaches a large chunk of plastic that holds the tilt mechanism to the metal column. I noticed the whole steering assembly was wiggling at that point so I got an open-ended wrench and tightened it an eighth of a turn at a time until I got it tight. Boom. No more bouncing steering wheel. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of this. Advertisement Four nuts later and the column is back in the car All of the plugs go back in far easier than they came out. Advertisement uh yeah just gonna shove that up above the column and ignore it Advertisement Suddenly boom the car is on a lift. And honestly for a 30 year old car that spent years sitting in a field in Kansas this is pretty impressively free of major rust. Advertisement There is quite a lot of oil though. Advertisement This was the only “real” rust in the whole undercarriage, and this wasn’t even soft just some surface rust around this drain plug thing. Upon going to remove the exhaust we noticed the nuts on the exhaust flange were impossible to get to. Who would design such a thing? Nobody. Turns out the engine was sitting a few inches to the passenger side. Here is a motor mount: Advertisement Here is an ex-motor-mount Advertisement Fabulous. We jacked up the engine enough to get the bolt and wrestled the exhaust out in one piece, which is probably good because there isn’t really anywhere it can come apart (don’t even bother with the slip fittings, that magic isn’t happening). Advertisement At this point the sun started peeking through the rainclouds so I took a moment to appreciate how incredibly humid it was and wipe the sweat off my brow, replacing it with a nice streak of black gunk. Advertisement Spent the next few hours undoing impossible to get to bolts and spilling ATF everywhere. Eventually you’ll be rewarded with an absurdly heavy lump of metal. Advertisement Climb back into the car and angrily unbolt the automatic shifter and throw it at the wall as hard as possible. Ponder why it didn’t so much as crack and reevaluate your thoughts on 80s plastics durability. Advertisement Much room for activities. Advertisement Spend 5 years jiggling the transmission around trying to get it to slip through the clutch into the pilot bearing and then realize the stupid debris shield thing has slipped slightly and is blocking the trans.
